The three alerions worn on the lapel have an ancient justification. At the end of the Middle Ages, it was believed that the Dukes of Lorraine were descended from a brother of Godfrey of Bouillon, William. Legend has it that Godfrey, after conquering Jerusalem, saw three alerions and pierced all three with a single shot from his bow.
