Una proposta teorico-metodologica per la definizione di una cronologia delle emissioni di moneta argentea nella Signoria e nel Ducato di Milano (1330-1535)

On December 12, 1511, Gregorio Stubmer, the representative of the German bankers Jakob Fugger and his nephews, appeared at the Milan Mint, located in S. Mattia alla Moneta, to settle a debt. He requested to be paid in silver, calculated at 6 ducats for 93 imperial soldi per ducat, for each mark of silver, otherwise he would claim expenses and damages. Terzago to take over the management of the Milan Mint, and the future mint master wrote that he was pleased to produce silver coinage at the value of 93 soldi per gold ducat. The study of proclamations and Milanese documents concerning the coins of the 15th and 16th centuries has highlighted the use of the formula “silver calculated at x soldi per gold florin” to define the quality of the silver coinage. Attempting to make calculations to give concrete meaning to this terminology reveals that a key variable is always missing—specifically, the value of silver equivalent to a gold ducat. Once this missing link is found, it becomes possible to reconstruct with reasonable accuracy the relationship between the valuation of the gold florin or ducat and the theoretical silver content of the accounting coin. By combining this information with knowledge of minting techniques, which led to a reduction in the silver content of the actual coin struck to cover honor and manufacturing costs, it is possible to reconstruct a chronology of the real coinage that dates back to the first Visconti emissions of the 14th century.

Il 12 dicembre del 1511, Gregorio Stubmer, procuratore dei banchieri tedeschi Giacomo Fugger e nipoti, si presentò alla casa della Zecca di Milano, in S. Mattia alla moneta, per essere saldato di un debito e chiese di essere pagato in argento al computo di ducati 6 da soldi 93 imperiali per ducato, per ogni marco d’argento, altrimenti avrebbe preteso spese e danni. Qualche anno dopo, nel febbraio del 1515, si stipularono i patti con Davide da Terzago per assumere la zecca di Milano e il futuro maestro di zecca scrisse di essere con- tento di produrre moneta d’argento alla bontà di 93 soldi per ducato d’oro. Lo studio delle gride e dei documenti milanesi riguardanti le monete del XV e XVI secolo ha, infatti,evidenziato l’uso della formula “argento al computo di x soldi a fiorino d’oro” per definire la bontà della moneta d’argento. Provando a fare dei calcoli per dare un significato concreto a tale terminologia ci si scontra con la consapevolezza che manca sempre un’incognita, un dato che faccia arrivare ad una soluzione che potesse rendere utile l’informazione ad un maestro di Zecca. Il dato mancante era il valore di argento equivalente ad un ducato d’oro. Trovato l’anello mancante si riesce a ricostruire con discreta precisione il legame tra la valutazione del fiorino o ducato d’oro e il contento teorico di argento della moneta di conto. Unendo questa informazione alla conoscenza delle tecniche di lavorazione in zecca che portavano ad un abbassamento del contenuto d’argento della moneta realmente coniata per coprire le spese di onoranza e manifattura, si può ricostruire una cronologia della moneta reale che risale fino alle prime emissioni viscontee del XIV secolo.
