(en) Klippe is a word of Swedish origin (meaning "to shear") referring to a coin struck by a hammer on an irregularly shaped flan, like a square. The use of roughly cut planchets (for example, from silverware that was not melted down), was motivated by the goal of quick production. These coins were indeed most often obsidional or necessity coinage. Klippes were primarily minted during the 17th and 18th centuries, although examples can be found in other periods of history.
