I hope I don't make anyone mad, but I really need some help and advice. I have inherited my father's coin collection. It's not a massive collection and it is not catalogued. It's all in one box. I am busy sorting and trying to make a catalogue and am taking into account all the advice I have see on this forum from not cleaning etc. I'm using small glass jars for now. I would like to use this site to catalogue but I'm not 100% sure how to do it as I don't have the scales or the knowledge about the metal ECT. Please can I ask for advice on how to continue from here. Kind thanks.
You started very and very rightly - to save the legacy of the fathers. That is the right thing to do, now the joy of life and the meaning of creating something begins.
Start with coins of your homeland that you know and read what is written on them.
You don't need scales yet and read the composition of the metal here after finding and inserting the coin.
Forget about cleaning now, if the crate was not in the mud.
If you use a mobile phone to take pictures -download the free app ,, Coinoscope,, can easily identify modern coins of the world.
I wish you a lot and a lot of success in your search.
Ivan
Thank you very much Ivan. The coins were fortunately not kept in mud! 😂
The collection is from all over the world, I have got up to 17 countries and I've just started sorting. I'm South African and have coins from late 1800's to about 1970's. So this bit is taking the most time so far as there are various types of currency used over the years.
I keep searching for coins on this site, and when I think I have found one, I would like to "add it to my collection" so I don't have to do it all again after I have finished sorting. But, I'm afraid of put in the wrong grade or something and anyone seeing the list gets cross with me! 🙈🙈🙈
Hello! Just add your coins to your collection on Numista. If you are not sure about the grade, you can always skip it and add it later. If you are not sure about a certain type, add the most popular variant of it, make a note for yourself and come back to it in the future.
A good link for grading coins. Keep in mind that even "expert" graders sometimes disagree on the grading of a particular coin. Just do your own best. In the very end, this is your collection, you can do whatever you want with it.
Here's a tutorial on How to grade my coin but I wouldn't worry too much about that now. You can leave them ungraded and add grades later (or not).
As far as others seeing your coins or grades, you can change your privacy setting to not allow that. Go to Settings and near the bottom set it like so:

But thank you for such a warm welcome!
Grading is subjective so there really is no ‘wrong’ grade. I understand being worried about it though...
Simply put, you cannot grade your own coins for one simple reason. you need a lot of experience at looking at coins over time to get a feel for the things that influence any coins particular grade.
if your listing / cataloging your coins then simply list each coin as F = fine and then later you can revise opinion.
no one is going to get upset with you over any coin you list as fine because its just a midgrade.
obviously your not trying to sell that coin sight unseen so until you have more time and knowledge and experience i would just sort your coins by country and types
over time you will learn a lot about grading simply by reading here and looking at your coins..
