£2 coin identification. 'R' in centre of coin (2000) . Does not seem fake . Any ideas what this is?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

The £2 pound coin has been counter stamped with the letter R. If the coin was fake it would feel light and sound dull when tapped because those early counterfeits were made out of lead compared to the modern fakes.
Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.

I think the question is why were they counter stamped with an R?
If they were made out of lead wouldn't it be heavier?
Thanks for the info. It feels and sounds very real. Never seen a counter stamped £2

I’m just as confused as you and the op is why did someone counter stamp the highest denomination coin in U.K. circulation instead of a penny.

I’ve tried to get hold of the older lead fakes but I always get out bided by another person most of the lead fakes I’ve found that the 2 pound coins have the date range of 1997-2001.

We get these kind of stamps on coins occasionally in Australia, mainly on $1 coins. They are used in vending machines as test coins.

Might just be somebody putting their mark on it like a "Graffiti tag".

Agreed - that is what I thought.
Some people do that in the hope of some day getting it back in their pocket change. 0:)
