Hi,

This Victorian Shilling was catalogued as being an 1840 issue, but the last digit looks like it might be an 8.

I wonder whether it's how die issue, or is it really an 1848 coin.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Cheers

First what country is it from because in Great Britain almost any year was used but in Britain’s colonies only certain dates were used

It's a standard British issue not a colonial coin.

Your shilling is an 1846/48 overdate. These were actually the most common type of 1848 shillings.

None were issued in 1847 and many 1848 ones were issued with the 8 in the date slug struck over the 6.

Catalogues £25 in Fine condition, yours is VG so probably half that.
I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

Thank you. That's really helpful. Even in VG it's much better than if it had been an 1840 as it was described.

Have a great weekend!
