Good evening Numista!
I recently acquired this AG3 - 1870 LCW - Canada - 50 cents coin.
I do my best to identify for myself any variation and am pragmatic. When I placed this coin under the scope, I got a bit of a jolt. Being an AG3, there isn't much to help with the ident. I was particularly drawn to the ribbon details and can't shake off the feeling that this might be an Obverse 1 (wishing, of course).
I would greatly appreciate any feedback.
Regards,
Roland
There is a shamrock behind the first jewel, which means that it's obverse 2.
On obverse 1 there is no shamrock. All other variants ─i.e. obv. 2 to 4─ have a shamrock in that position.
The coin I linked was being sold as "no LCW" on eBay and right away I could see it was just a worn out LCW. The shamrock gave it away. They grade their own coins, but didn't know that basic fact. At least they relisted the coin... from $1000 to $50!!
I suppose one has to make sure that the shamrock has not been removed when looking to buy an LCW.
GOT IT! Thank you so much for that detail.
I've been using the Charlton catalogue for some years now, and that detail is not there. When I look at the photos this catalogue provides, it's obvious and apparent even on an AG3.
Again, thank you for the feedback!
