Hi,
Just wondering if you could help me. I have an Aus $1 coin which I believe is struck on wrong planchet.
Weight of my planchet is 7.62g
Aus $1 is 9g
Metal composition is
97.88% copper
2.12 % Nickel
Aus $1 composition is
92% copper
6% alluminium
2% nickel
My planchet measurements
24.57mm diameter
2.37mm thickness
$1 planchet is
25mm diameter
3mm thick

My coin is a light strike and has little to no reads on edge of coin.

I understand you can't verify it etc I am just looking for a point toward the resources I need to identify the planchet so I can have it graded and certified as an error.

Thanks for your time

Hi - It looks to be the right metal to me, but that is just going by the colour. How did you determine that the metal is 97.88% Copper and 2.12% Nickel?

Also the edge does look very worn down it should look like this.

That might be why the weight is down as much as it is. I suspect that the coin is what is known as a "Dryer Coin". That is it has been stuck in a Tumble Dryer for some time which is why the edge is so worn down and smooth.

Best thing would be to take it to a reputable coin dealer near you to have it checked out.

I thought this originally also however The metal composition is different to an aus $1  as mentioned in OP. Has been scanned by 2 XRF machines one of which was emperial coins. They were interested and also stated potential wrong planchet I just need to somehow ID the planchet it could be which is proving extremely difficult.

Well the ultimate place to send it to would be the Royal Australian Mint. They will check it out for you and let you know their findings. I would call them first to see what the procedure is and go from there.
