I would like some info on a coin I have acquired. I believe it is a  1676 Cosimo III Ongaro. I took it to a jeweler and it is in fact gold however it weighs a little more than 7 grams. From everything I have read it should weigh about 3.5 grams.  Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time and help.

Welcome to Numista!

Please provide photos and the size, which should be around 23 mm.

Also, what purity did the jeweler say the coin was? (i.e. close to 24 karat or something less).

Hello,

Thanks for the welcome and for your reply. The coin is just about an inch.  I was told it was 22k, if you need better pics let me know. Thank you again for your response.

Hey Rummy, the pictures aren't great but you can see that's not a 350 year old coin. Here you have some examples how that coin should look like (and of course with a weight about 3.45 g. in stead of 7 g.: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?term=Cosimo+III+ongaro+1676&category=1-2&lot=&date_from=&date_to=&thesaurus=1&images=1&en=1&de=1&fr=1&it=1&es=1&ot=1&currency=usd&order=0

Thanks Td,

I had a feeling it looked too good to be that old but couldn't figure out why someone would make a fake coin using real 22k gold.

So this is only worth the value of the gold itself then?  I'm glad I didn't pay any money for it.  So I could just take it somewhere that buys gold I guess?  I have 3 5 gallon water jugs of coins I am going through so I'm sure I will have lots more questions as I really no nothing about coins.

Thanks for all your time and help!

I forgot to mention on the envelope I found this coin in, the only info it had on it was, Gold Coin 86603922-4   You wouldn't have any idea what those numbers could mean.  I was thinking maybe a catalog number or auction number but if it is a fake then it probably wouldn't be that.

I am so baffled I can't wrap my head around it being fake but real gold.

Apart from what is written, it looks brass.

Gold does not look that colour.

Will see what other members think.

Token collector [1600-1899] with some coins

According to CNI (Corpus Nummorum Italicorum) Volume  XI, p. 35, the only gold coin struck in Livorno in 1676 was the Ongaro weighing about 3.4 grams.  No heavier gold coin was struck.

Combined with the comments on appearance, that leads to the likely conclusion that it's a replica of some sort.  If you've got 7 grams of 22 karat gold, that's a nice chunk of change at today's gold price.

Anything else interesting comes out of those 5 gallon jugs, just post again!

It just baffles my mind why someone would spend the money on all that gold to make it and what not think a coin collector would know it wasn't that old and why would they use double the amount they needed, I just don't get it.  But anyhow thanks again and if I find anything else interesting, I will post. Have a fabulous evening
