Years ago I tried to learn to speak Italian and French. I believed I failed because I had no one with whom to practice. Europeans are far ahead of us in this respect and made most evident by our fellow coin traders.

You're wrong. The Spanish and English native speakers are bad multilinguists in Europe and in all the world. I think it's because we can speak with hundreds millions people around the world.
The cliché about the European multilingualism is because countries with languages with fewer speakers, Netherlands, for example.
