The Second Tower stands on the mountain called Cesta, the highest peak of Mount Titano, at 756 meters above sea level. It was an ancient watchtower already existing in Roman times, and the name Cesta possibly derives from “cista,” a chest used by the Romans to store sacred furnishings. The tower, dating from the 15th century, is pentagonal and is also known as Fratta, perhaps from “afrattata,” a term referring to the outer band of the walls above, enclosed by hedges. Between 1925 and 1935, it was restored, and the medieval fortification was reconstructed, including battlements, walkways, bartizans, passages, quarters, and a guardhouse. It is currently home to the Museum of Ancient Arms.
The 1 euro coin has featured a splendid view of the Second Tower since 2017, the year when the designs on the national sides of euro coins were changed.
