International Mountain Day, established by the United Nations General Assembly and led globally by the FAO, is celebrated on December 11 worldwide. The aim of the Day is to raise public awareness about the importance of preserving mountain ecosystems and promoting the sustainable development of mountain areas, which are home to an invaluable heritage of biodiversity and essential natural resources.
The reverse of the 5-euro coin features the First Tower, which rises atop Mount Titano. It is the largest and oldest of the three fortresses, dating back to the 11th century.
The obverse of the coin shows a symbolic composition with the Three Towers silhouetted against Mount Titano, each topped by a feather, the emblematic symbol of the Republic of San Marino.
