Turkish coins ?

Hi - I posted these before but now I have adjusted my macro and am using a digi cam on the pc version of the site, so it should be a bit easier !

Good morning, Mark. Coincidentally, I have just been logging a few of these type of coins in my collection and making modification requests on some of the Numista catalogue pages. Yours are slightly rough but I think you should be looking at Ottoman Empire, Abdul Mejid, whose accession year was AH1255 (١٢٥٥) or 1839 Gregorian. To positively identify your coins you will need the weight and possibly the diameter as well and you will need to be able to read the regnal year which is at the top of the reverse (the side with the ١٢٥٥ at the bottom). However, you may struggle with this last bit since your coins are quite worn but have a look and see how you get on. It's possible your coin is not yet on Numista in which it should be added and I can give you a hand with that if you would like. Regards, Rick

Thanks Rick, I know they're rough but I like circulated coins as they have a story to tell :)
I think I also have that top coin - like Rick said it may be this one but maybe it might be different denomination not quite sure but looks similar

I know what you mean. Circulated coins definitely have more character and "feel appeal" than Uncirculated or (yuk) Proof coinage.

I think Ogramz is on the right lines with your coins - they have the look of the lower denomination Billon coinage of Abdul Mejid. Let us know when you've had a chance to measure them.

Hehey Rick, nice job.

I've been verifying your requests, I think also for South Africa, and it's very rare that I'll ever press the reject button.

Now, as for the coins, on the back of the second one the Arabic numeral for 5's on there, so I'm thinking that might be the value. But it's better to check the weight. Newer Ottoman coins have the value under the toughra just in case you come across younger coins.

Thanks for your kind remarks, SmartOneKg. I am always seeking to improve the accuracy of the catalogue where I see incorrect or missing data. I've got another request on the way where I think I can improve the quality of images on another Ottoman coin - I'll add it soon.

Well spotted on the second of these two with regard to the value - I must have taken my eye off that one! With that in mind we are almost certainly looking at the second series of Abdul Mejid which would make it a Copper 5 Para KM#666:

We might struggle to nail down the exact year because the regnal year is located beneath the toughra on the obverse (at about 9 o'clock on the bottom right image which needs to be rotated about 90 degreees anti-clockwise). However, if we can get the weight of the coin we should be able to find out from Krause whether it is thick, medium or thin planchet.

Yep, the 5 para is a devlish coin, according to World Coins.

Upon looking at it, it looks like there's an Arabic two.
