If a coin has a small hole in it, does it decrease the value?

Zac, how do you remember all these forum posts? Good job

I am by no means a coin snob and I think a hole rightly reduces a coin to poor.
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

Kills the price but still worth having IMO ! I have a 5/10 quirsh from
British occupied Egypt which has clearly had a hole drilled into it I got for £1.50 posted its definitely worth having as 95% of the detail is still there, more than some that just have circulation wear so I wouldnt let it worry you too much but don't pay the going rate for a good one ! As said ideal gap fillers ! With ones like this I'll put it in my album, then when I get decent one reverse that so you can see both sides next to each other ha !
I bought a holed coin once, years ago when I was a student. It was a Victorian Bun Head Half Penny and if it weren't for the hole it would have been quite a pretty little coin. I bought it for 20p I had no real money to spare at the time for adding to my collection, so it seemed like a reasonable compromise; my collection grew a little and I could afford it.

The problem came when I added it to the album I stored my coins of Victoria in. Whenever I opened the album there it was glaring at me - this hole which did not belong in the coin every time I looked at it. I knew it was not right; not the way it was meant to be and this really annoyed me. It was like its presence somehow tarnished the other coins in the album, debasing them as works of art making them all pointless little discs of metal. Eventually the idea of actually opening my Victoria album depressed me so I had to remove the coin from the album and stick it in the bottom of my sock drawer where it could no longer haunt me.

By removing the coin, my collection was vastly improved and I could again appreciate each individual coin on its own merits.

I'm quite OCD about my coins which surprises most people that know me well because I'm quite a laid back person. My coins are the one part of my life which is properly ordered so major imperfections irritate me.

Ultimately there is nothing wrong with possessing holed coins in your collection, especially if it makes them more affordable for you to collect; and I will say this, I think it's a better idea to collect coins that are holed or buckled than collect reproduction coins. If you are however like myself when it comes to these things you might want to think twice before buying them.

Walder, that is very funny post, I can understand where you are coming from, I really don't like holes ether. Its also a little ironic because your profile coin is a holed coin. I know that one is made that way, its just ironic.

Its weird how you read other peoples posts and after a while you start liking people you have never met, I feel like we are all friends. I wish we could all get together for a beer and show off our favorite coins.

When shall we do it and where? It would be awesome. London 2012?!
Beer, I wish I had the money for beer at the moment.  Hopefully that will change soon.
I make my own beer and wine, its half the price and twice the quality, lets do it in South Carolina, I will host and everyone can try my beer! Free beer is worth the plain ticket right?

We can do London next month

I don't drink, so it'll have to be a lemonade!
If I could afford it I would but I can't; the thought of missing out on home brew is a painful one.
