Hi!
I need someone to clearify this for me, since I don't get it at all. In the comments of this coin it says, and I quote: "Example of the variety. The left lion has a tail, the right one doesn't. Only the lion on the bottom left on the shield can have this deformity. All three varieties have no additional value compared to the regular coins. 1968 is the easiest to find and even very common; 1969 is the hardest to find." Then there are two pictures of the lion, and both lions have a tail. The left one is much weaker, but you can clearly see there's a tail. Can we please remove this comment and date lines, or are there really a variety, but the creator failed to upload th right picture?

Cheers!
From my own coin and the main image in the page, it's clear that the bottom lion's tail is much thinner than the top lion's. This inevitably leads to some coins appearing to lack the main part of the tail, although the bent-over end of the tail is always present. The question is whether this is due to wear in circulation or a worn die. I'm reminded of the 3-legged "Buffalo" nickel, which SCWC ascribes to a worn die. However, this Swedish version isn't in my copy of SCWC so, unless it appears in the Swedish catalogues, I'd question its validity.

Thanks for your reply. I will check the catalogue when I get time.

Lol! Yeah, probably. 😄

Yo be honeat, I have no memory of this, but it's been 1.5 years, so no wonder. 😜

Hi everyone!

Maybe a bit late to jump in after 5 years, but I just wanted to share some of my own documentation on the so-called “with” and “without tail” 2 kronor from 1968. If you’d like to check it out, I’ve published two separate pages here:

With tail: https://www.myntinfo.se/2-krona-1968-med-svans/
Without tail: https://www.myntinfo.se/2-krona-1968-utan-svans/

From my own study and observations, the coins where the lower lion seems to lack a tail still show a faint trace of it at the thickest part. That suggests it is most likely caused by poorly prepared dies, not by circulation wear. This tail deformation only affects the bottom-left lion on the shield.

I also created a simple GIF showing a zoomed-in comparison between both types, switching back and forth to highlight the difference.

Just wanted to share this in case it’s helpful, even if I know the thread is already marked as “Solved”. 🙂

Hope it adds something to the discussion!
