Can anyone tell me how to distinguish the 1910 Canada 50 cents with Victorian Leaves (KM 12) and the same coin with Edwardian Leaves (KM 12a)? I have looked at them both until I am nearly cross eyed and I cannot tell the difference.

According to Numista the 1910 KM 12 (Victorian) has medal orientation and the 1910 KM 12a (Edwardian) has coin orientation. If that is accurate why make a big deal out some subtle difference of the leaves? I just don't get it. Can someone educate me?

The dies minting the coins were simply different, that's what the ado is all about.

I recall a website about Canadian coins mentioning it was much easier to tell the way the 9 in the year lined up with the N in Canada on the reverse. It is noticeable in the picture on the page for the coin. If the 9 is perfectly centered under the N, it is the Victorian type. If the right end of the 9 is just beyond the right end of the 9, it is the Edwardian type. I'll have to try and pull both of mine out at some point, but I think the alignments were truly different, none of these details would be necessary as you say. I'd be very surprised if that's correct.
From my 2020 Charlton Catalogue there are 3 main distinctions.

1. There is almost no rim on the VL variety.

2. Take a look at the leaves to the right side of the date. Victorian Leaves almost touch the denticles. Edwardian Leaves are further from the denticles.

3. Also, the cross atop the the crown is different.

I wish I could supply you with pictures.

Hoping this is helpful.

That is pictures of a 10 Cents coin.
The member asked about a 50 Cents coin.
Or are the designs similar?
Just asking.

I am the original poster on this topic. Here is my coin. It has medal orientation. Edwardian or Victorian?

Your 9 is a little to the right so it is the Edwardian
So 1910 Canada 50 cent coins with Edwardian leaves can have medal OR coin orientation? According to the Numista catalogue this coin has coin orientation only--my coin has medal orientation. The other variety with Victorian leaves can have either orientation according to the catalogue.

I'll have to get both of mine out on Monday and take a look about the alignment
