So I have two coins, a 2011 $50 American Buffalo Gold Bullion and a 1929 Indian Head Half Eagle, both struck with the word “COPY” on them. The first was a gift and the other I bought recently (thinking at first it was the real deal only to find the “COPY” mark on it after I got it home c’est la vie). I was wondering if anyone else had experience with such coins (that is “COPY” coins in general). Do you keep them in your collection? If you use this site to track your collection, do you make note that you have a “COPY” version of the coin? If you bought the coin yourself, did you buy it knowing that it was a copy? If so, what was your reason for getting? If not, what was your reaction to realizing it wasn’t the real thing? Do you have rules or guides for buying coins (copies or otherwise)? And in general, what is your reasoning for collecting coins?
copies , at least is honest. for interest only, not pretending to be real gold.
edit to add, yes i did buy a copy , thinking it was real , and lesson learned the hard way. happens to everyone. we all have that secret volume. it is a black museum.

I have a couple of forgeries (they do not have the word copy on them).
I certainly do NOT keep them anywhere near my collection and I don't track them in the Numista catalog. I have a box that I call 'Hopeless items'. This contains damaged, rusted or unidentifiable coins and that's where I keep my copies/forgeries...
Basically in the bin 'scrap metal' 😆
