Friends,

I have this Two Pice coin issued by the East India Company (EICo) in 1794. It was issued for Bombay Presidency. Although in any official literature, this coin is said to have “oblique milled reeds” on its edges; However my coin looks plain on its edges, But looking at it under the microscope tells a different story altogether. Microscope shows faint Reed Marks on the edges.

Please confirm whether this coin is genuine or not.

Coin: Two Pice 1794 AD, Bombay Presidency.
Weight: 11.91 grams.
Diameter: 29.97 mm.
Thickness: 2.2 mm.
Axis: ⬆️⬇️.
Edge: Oblique Milled, Grained Right.
Material: Copper.
Mint: Soho Mint, Birmingham.

The coin seems reasonable to me. It seems a bit light, but the coin has lost some metal.
Thanks a lot for confirming, bjherbison. I will link relevant numista page from next time. Yes you are right, the coin has suffered lot of wear in its 220+ years of existence. On some areas thickness is also not uniform, There is a difference of around 0.02 to 0.05 mm at some places. I think that either due to corrosion it might have lost some metal, wear out edges etc; The coin dealer might have cleaned it before selling it to me. Dug out coins do have lot of corrosion on them. Second theory is that, in old days people use to steal metal by clipping away the edges etc.
The comments on the coin page say the weight varies 12.13-13.45 grams so a weight of 11.91 g is quite reasonable. I am curious about the alignment. Yours is coin alignment while the coin page says it should be medal alignment?

Of the four 1794 Bombay coins with Numista listings two say coin alignment and two say medal. I would expect the series to be the same. Possibly they vary by denomination, possibly the coins vary, or maybe two of the Numista entries are incorrect.

(I have a 1/2 Pice. Numista says Coin and my example is Coin alignment.)

1/2 Pice; Coin; https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces15705.html
1 Pice; Medal; https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces15704.html

2 Pice; Medal; https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces22936.html
I agree. I would expect all 4 from the same mint to be the same. Ucoin lists all 4 as coin alignment so your guess that Numista may be incorrect on 2 makes sense.
As per my knowledge, All Two Pice coins of 1791 had Axis of ⬆️⬇️. All coins of 1794 has ⬆️⬇️ axis too; However one variety of coins issued in 1794 has ⬆️⬆️ axis also. So Numista page on Two Pice has incomplete information.
