A while ago I read somewhere that a 'ping' test or an 'ice' test can be done to determine whether or not a coin is made silver. Please can someone point me to where more information can be found about these tests?
Thanks Graeme
So, the principle of the ice test ....
- the coin is conducting heat from the solid surface below it (like a table) to the ice
- the faster the ice melts, the quicker heat is being transferred through the coin to the ice
Now here is the important part:
- the speed at which heat will be transferred to the ice is proportional to both the intrinsic conductivity of the coin, and its dimensions
So the test will give best results if you compare a coin of unknown composition to one of known composition, and about the same dimensions.
