Hi came across this 1888 halfpenny with a distinctive dot to the left of the date. A mint error?

Looks like a simple small cud to me. Error? If you want to call it that. Nothing major to note, adds value, and certainly not a variety.

Don't get put off by anybody most Numismatists are Very Helpful and mean nothing by there banter.
http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/halfp.html Gives good Explanation of the Verity of Die Used and as is said it is most Probably a small fragment of Foreign Material in the Die that Caused the Dot but we never know it could be a new verity.
