16mm, 0.62 g. Apparently copper or alloy. Can anyone identify when it is from, and where if not Northeim?
I didn't find it for Northeim in the catalog "(2011) German Coins 1501 - present 3rd ed"
Referee of south atlantic islands
Yes, Northeim - this coin (with a different reverse) has similar obverse ...

Still trying to work out lettering both sides.

MON[ETA] NOVA .....S with a Gothic N in middle.

Not looked at reverse lettering yet. Obverse still unclear.
MON * NOVA * N?R?OS * maybe.

No idea of most reverse letters.

SZ? OLA WV? ?EH are the four groups divided by the cross arms.

I'm pretty sure that lettering is REX.
Yes, could well be. Thanks.
SZ? OLA WV? REX
Could not find a date either side.
Also looked through every Northeim coin on NGC and found
none with either same pictures or lettering.

A lot of surnames on coins end in -us so may be
SZ? OLA WVS REX
Sz?olawus Rex maybe.

Hi. Happy New Year. On av. I see SAN OLAWS REX, the other side is N but not Northeim. Rather, it's about Nidaros, now Trondheim. Bishop's Monata. Norway.
Regards Mariusz
ZacUK/Essor Prof/Frenchlover, thank you for your eyes. With a strong light and a lens I haven't gotten any further on the lettering except to confirm that your guess of "S" before REX seems correct. It might be "AWS REX" or "AVVS REX". I don't see any date either.

Saurma has only one no-date coin and it is smaller without lettering.

Krause says Northeim was under the control of the dukes of Brunswick-Luneburg, but I haven't found any match between Brunswick-Luneburg and "SZ? OLA WVS". I didn't find any duke (or regent) names starting with S, and no names with OLA in the middle.

OLAV ENGELBREKTSSON 1523-1537
That coin (Norway) has OLAWS lettering, plus a shield containing a lion, on a cross.
Other side different, but a start. Thanks for the clues. 8)

Another Norway coin (Nidaros), this time the other side similar, namely crowned Gothic N letter.
So probably your coin is from that country, not Germany.

Similar both sides to this >

1 Hvid - Gaute Ivarsson (1474-1510)
SAN OLAWS REX
Lettering other side different though.

MON[ETA] NOVA .....S with a Gothic N in middle.

Other side with SAN OLAWS REX
I guess the W looks strange as it is stretched out to fit in the section,
which the other three sections each have three letters in.

Still looking ...

Thank you! (We cross-posted earlier as I was taking time to study the coin.)
I found a PDF document, that says it is
MON[ETA] NOVA NIDROS (with the A missing of NIDAROS) ...

Thank you. That all seems very good evidence and matches the coin. Now I need to study Nidaros.
Both sides, hopefully correct ...

Obverse: Large Gothic N in centre. Legend between two circles of pearls.
Lettering: MON NOVA NIDROS

Reverse: Norwegian coat of arms over long cross. Legend between two circles of pearls.
Lettering: SAN OLAWS REX

Phew ! Also well done to Mariusz ! :wiz:

Based on links above and others in Numista it seems my dark coin would be silver with a denomination of 1 Hvid. Does that seem right?

I'm planning to put it in Numista under Norway/Norwegian Archbishops with no date or reign specified.

(The eBay auction found above that specifies Northeim is actually the same coin. The listing originally specified a date and other details until I pointed out the coin didn't have a date and the details were wrong. The seller had copied information from the source and not given the coin a good look. After discussion I purchased the coin only knowing it wasn't a duplicate of a coin in my collection. https://www.ebay.ca/itm/German-States-Northeim-16th-Century-Hammered-Coin-Worthy-Of-Further-Research-/255288590128?_trksid=p2047675.m43663.l10137&nordt=true&rt=nc&orig_cvip=true )

Thank you. I now have an issuer, date range, and another website to review to understand coins.

I'd like to change the lettering slightly, based on that website.
I did mention earlier that names often end -us so I think now
SAN OLAVVS REX
Santus Olavus Rex
as the V was used instead of U so it is a double V and
not a long W as written earlier.

Also here is the PDF I mentioned earlier - so much information of those coins ...

[Det Kongelige Norske Videnskabers Selskab - NTNU] - it does not open to a web page,
it downloads quickly to your computer to save and view when you want. I did it like that.
