Coin scales ?

Not sure if this is the proper place to ask, not sure if it is coin related or not. I picked up a collection of bits and bobs at an auction, mainly coins, and included was a little silver coloured item which looked like a propelling pencil. On closer inspection, I realised it was a small spring balance, one side the scale was marked ounces, the other it was marked SW and 1D to 6D. Just wondering if they are some kind of coin scale.
You provided two images of the OZ side. Could you add an image of the SW size?

How close is the 3 oz line to the 6 d line? Actually, a more specific request: What oz weight precisely would 6d correspond to?

It isn't obvious a coinage scale, but I'm told that in the UK banks would weigh a group of silver coins or copper coins to get the value instead of separating and counting.
That is a John Sheldon letter (postal) scale, circa 1840's.

That is the one. Thank you both for your replies.
That's a great find. Maybe worth more than everything else in the auction?

Agreed. Wonderful find with some great history. I love these little oddments.

Super find! B)
Dickens may have observed such a thing in the hands of a London merchant or man-of-business in one of his stories. :D
