I have been cataloguing an inherited collection using this site and a Spinks 2003 /38th Ed catalogue. Now whilst i expected many valuation figures to be out of date in the catalogue, i have discovered, through suggesting an update here that had been dismissed, that the references can change over time. In this instance what Ed 38 has as a Charles I 6d (Tower mint under King 1625-42), is the reference for a shilling in the same issue in the 2021 edition.
Does this mean that all references after this point have changed ? or is this likely to just be a localised renumbering within a time period and the editions would match again after a while. Any insight would be welcome.
Thanks

One way to check that out is to search for coins at dealers who use Spink numbers. No doubt they will use the more recent editions, so you can compare with your 2003 edition.
Charles I is a particularly difficult king because of the Revolution. That some new research led to some new chronologies and numbering wouldn't be surprising.
Thanks for your thoughts. Based on your suggestion, i have spot checked my 2003 edition against this site ie the first coin in a reign, the first silver coin etc and i found no differences. The only differences I have spotted in that very limited check are in the Charles I coins, so, as you suggest, some renumbering would seem to have occurred at some point.
I had assumed numbering would be constant, which, on the whole, it is, but i now appreciate that it can happen. Perhaps i should invest in the 2022 edition !
Unfortunately or fortunately depending how you view things ref numbers change as new coins are found that need to slot in. Or others deleted because they don't actually exist. Highly recommend buying the latest version of SPINKS as alot will have changed in 20 years!
