Hey everyone! I’m questioning the authenticity of this Mexican 8 Reales coin I bought recently and wanted to see if anyone had any ideas.

I assumed it to be real since I’d known the dealer I bought it from to be reputable and reliable. The coin weighs ~25.96 grams and seems to be missing any edge design, both of which I’m praying is wear.

All comments are welcome and I appreciate and help!
Looks genuine and not surprising the edge is worn for a very well circulated coin. The weight discrepency also could be explained this way too. Check diameter and do some silver tests on it for reassurance but to me, it looks authentic. About 1 gram off is not of great concern.

Edit. Found this photo of the edge. See if you see signs of these on your example. I will also ask to add it to the catalog as it is not there at present.

Hi NoodleAioli, unfortunately I don't think that it's genuine.

Besides missing the geometric pattern around the edge, the lettering around the rim on the reverse is misaligned.

See comparisons with Numista https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces15085.html
and with NGC https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/world/mexico-empire-of-iturbide-8-reales-km-310-1822-1823-cuid-1200951-duid-1447998

The Numista example you show is a 1822. Here is another certified 1823

I do see slight signs of the edge design on his coin although very worn on the portion he provided.
Photo of my edge. I took this last night for an additional example of typical edge.
Hi harryg, I looked at quite a few 1823 coins and they all appeared to be very similar to the 1823 NGC coin that I used for comparison.

These five can be viewed on Coinshome https://www.coinshome.net/en/coin_variations-8_Real-Silver-First_Mexican_Empire_(1821_1823)-K3IKbzbirhoAAAFN6vRWb1A1.htm

The misalignment of the lettering around the rim that I referred to earlier is probably easier to discern if you look at where the 'M' in MEX at 7 o'clock begins in relation to the base of the cactus .

Hmmm. Still leaning on authentic. Perhaps different dies?
I think that we're all still learning harryg, especially when it comes to only having photographs to base an opinion on.

Take for example the 1823 certified coin that you referenced earlier ... going on the photos alone, I would have been concerned with its authenticity!

  • the eagle's beak is very close to its wing
  • the area under the eagle's wing and above its claw is very small
  • the spacing of 'R.I.M.' is very tight

I think what is important to remember is that like Cob colonial coins, weight and purity of the silver coin was the most important issue at the time and design features less so. In the end, it was all about the silver and not accuracy and consistany in the dies or strike. Always learning.
Hey Everyone! I appreciate the help in the authentication process. I’ve talked a well-versed Mexican coin collector and he’s telling that he’s found a die variety with the spacing and font my coin has but the mint mark is dubious. I’ll be going to my LCS soon for a XRF reading and if that comes back well, I may just take a gamble and submit to NGC to get a final authority.

Thanks again!
looks good to me. Good plan.
