I set up a page for Tamaya Game Token - Japan – Numista but I cannot identify the japanese characters on the token.

Any help is welcome.

Have you tried using Google Lens?

I did. It only show me other tokens and the images I already have. I did find this TAMAYA / (Japanese) (TC-585972) (tokencatalog.com) but no infos on what the japanese characters might be.

Update: If the bottom characters are たまや then it mean Tamaya. The center characters might be 玉 for Tama (ball) since its surrounded by circle/balls. I think I solved this on my own. 😀

Yes, the bottom characters say Tamaya.  Google lens worked for me if I held it juussssst right.

Plus it reminded me of the token I added a few weeks back.

In the Edo period a tamaya was a store that sold beads or a person that sold bubbles hence all these round design elements. It was also a fireworks maker thats the reason the Japanese often say TAMAYA when a firework explodes.

This one is most likely just one of the countless Ge-Sen tokens or from one of the innumerable pachinko parlours.

Yes, it reads “tamaya” in hiragana.

“Tama” means jewel or ball (e.g, baseball), “ya” added means a store.  The kanji in the center reads “tama” and means jewel or ball as well.

As a bit of trivia, in Japan during the Edo period, Tamaya was the name of a famous fireworks store.  At the start of warm weather, there would be a fireworks competition between Tamaya and another store called Kagiya (I guess it means Keystore, here “key” could be for a lock but also relates to the key to a problem or the key to success).  I mention this in case there might be a connection with whatever is the linked game (if it is a game token).

I know your question has been answered, but I wanted to add this: When you go to the coins catalog, in the box that says search query, there is a graphic next to the question mark. If you hover your cursor over it, it says “show the virtual keyboard for special characters.” Click on that, and the special keyboard will show up, with many languages, including Japanese.

This is a great way to help you read coins in other languages, as well as a feature this website should promote heavily.
