I got a 50 sen note 1945 recently. It is P59. In the description of the note the lettering block does not have the extreme right hand character that can be seen in the image. It looks like many Japanese notes from the war period have the same lettering block.  It is incorrect. I suspect the symbol indicates "Greater" as it is after the symbols for Japan, Nippon.

If you talk about specific catalog entries always provide a link, please.

A picture of your item in question doesn't hurt either.

You have a P#60 not P#59:

N#208853

N#210311

Thank you for putting the link. My tablet always has en.numista.com as the link it does not change as I navigate the site. I have P59. Look at the image of the banknote. On the face the symbol on the right hand side, like an umbrella is not in the letter block description. That seems to me what distinguishes the Great and the non Great items. All the WWII Japanese occupation currency that I have has this symbol.  This note is not an occupation currency but a valid Japanese currency. The umbrella like symbol is not displayed or translated in the letter block. It is lacking.

I also think you have a P60.

The P59 is Showa 17 to 19.

The P60 is Showa 20.

The year is at the far right of each banknote.

I was wrong on the date, it is a 1943, year 18. Regardless P60 has only 8 symbols in obverse center top but the lettering block in the description has 9 symbols. I can see how the 9th symbol is like the chinese symbol ren and how it could translate to the 9th symbol on the P59.

Do those symbols translate to both, Great Imperial Japanese Government note and Imperial Japanese Government note?

Just post a picture that would be the easiest way.

Thank you ThePoet.  I see it now.

Idolenz, the problem is not in ThePoet's banknote, but in the Numista catalog.  The Banknote Catalog list the exact same lettering for both P59 and P60.  But of course the banknotes have different lettering.

Ah, I don't know why I over-read this. Yes, their is a ‘dai’ to much, I removed it.

Exactly, if only I could be more succinct.  It is the character Dai, I have figured out. Dai Nippon Tai Koku Seifu Shihei for P59 and Nippon Tai Koku Seifu Shihei for P60. Thank you Fairfield.

It might be a problem in more than one page.

No, P#60 is the only page of this issuing entity in the catalog right now.
