I have inherited more than a hundred old bank notes, most are German, some have printing that looks Russian.  I do not know what to do with them.   I am in California between San Francisco and Sacramento.  Are there reputable individuals within driving distance that would be able to appraise this collection?

Post a few sample images, and people will be able to give you a very quick initial appraisal of your old notes.

Thank you for your prompt answer.  Where and exactly how do I post images?

When you're typing a reply, you can see a little picture next to the smiley face, you click on it to post pictures from your computer. Im also interested to see what you inherited since i love old german and russian notes.

To get an idea of what you have (if it were me), I'd try to identify (ID) the notes using this site or the BNM (Bank Note Museum). Start with Germany. Most of them have the date on them.  ID a few & then write down their P# (for future reference).   Once you get comfortable going through a few, then you may wish to organize them (Country & P (Krause) reference number).

Another thing you may want to do is get an idea about how banknotes are graded (so when you take them in to a shop you will have a better idea of the terms). Check out this thread or the PMG grading scales to get familiar with the terms.  The better condition (higher the grade) the better the return (money paid for your note).

Last, but not least, if you haven't already done so, get the notes in proper mylar currency sleeves & keep them in a dry place once you've organized them. In fact, this is probably the firs thing you should do before handling them (& when handling them try to do it in a careful/gentle manner if they're in good shape). Good luck!

I am the Newbie who started this thread.  I am going to try to upload a PDF sampling of my Russian currency.  I have bout 10 X that amount in German currency.  I hope  this works.

No luck - every time I go to select the PDF it is grayed out or won't “go”.  It is a large file, about 37 MB.  I'm using a Mac book pro.  I clicked first on the picture icon.  What am I doing wrong?

PDF's are not allowed in forum posts.  You can however attach a PDF to a coin or banknote in your collection.  If that coin or banknote is in your swaplist others can see it when they open your swaplist.

You could convert your .pdf to a .jpg (by screen shot for example) and upload it.

OK, I think I have converted the Russian Currency to JPG format.  I'll try it now.

 Well , those pictures are:

really small

mostly white space

only one side

in centre of page

not numbered

I tried to make them bigger >

1

2

3

 So, please:

make them bigger

crop the pictures, like I did

show both sides

put one on left and one in middle, on same line

add a number before the two pictures on a line

 Thanks 😊

Oh, and say maybe 5 lines (10 pictures) for each reply, as example below -

not one reply with 22 small pictures in a line down the middle of the page.

Thanks 😊

1   Front   Back

2   Front   Back

3   Front   Back

4   Front   Back

5   Front   Back

The numbers are so if a member knows what the note is they can

put that number in their reply.

Lastly, once the pictures are cropped, they can be put in the banknote search page

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?ct=banknote

in the picture section [the camera icon on second line], then click Search.

Like I did with yours  - this is the the first result for the first picture [without seeing reverse picture]

1 N#203931 [1909 same as your note]

2 not checked

3 not checked

So with bigger pictures, you may be able to find most of them yourself -

then put just the unknown notes on the forum.
