Small disrepancies on banknote sizes on numista catalogue

I would just like to point that in 99% cases, things that I find in numista catalogue are accurate in terms of banknote information. However, there are some errors occasionally (e.g. Fiji 7 dollar commemorative banknote) when you compare dimensions data with official data from central banks. Plus, if the banknotes are not cut perfectly to size (sometimes the case because of tolerances inside equipment) it may cause confusion among collectors. Recently I had a case when a collector complained that banknote was trimmed, which i rejected with contempt, and pointed to official data and possible varieties. Won the case since there was no proof of cutting of any kind.

So whenever you buy something valuable, do your homework

The cut down size of a specific banknote denomination can vary.

In the case of Irish banknotes from 1928-2001, the size of notes has been recorded as varying by up to 5mm within a denomination on older pre-1978 notes. Additionally, on earlier notes, the cuts are not always square. The cut dimensions on more modern notes have been recorded as varying by up to 3mm.

Dimensions of many banknotes listed in numista are in many cases are from actual measurements of a note, which can lead to stated dimensions of similar sized notes varying by a few mm - Barclays banknote issues in the various West Indies islands are a good example of this, as members have uploaded picture and data of notes in their possession.

True. I noticed too that even though British nations + colonies have almost perfect, same weights of each of their modern coins, in case of banknotes they are not so precise. I have notes in collection that are around 3 mm out of specs, and from 6 different countries.

The material can also shrink and/or expand depending on the stress of handling and moisture content.

I hate moisture and large security threads on large banknotes. Especially new ones. It always deforms banknotes a bit and it is super difficult to avoid. Do you have any tips for that :-)? Maybe out in between book leaves?

Stable climate is the only thing you can do and that's hard enough.

Even large well funded museums fight with it. The British Museum's lack of visitors in Covid times messed up the usual climate and some of their exhibits were beginning to dry out and crack.
