Hello,

I recently acquired this coin from the German state of Wied-Runkel.

Numista already has an entry for a ¼ Stuber coin of that issuer.(N#31710)

But upon closer inspection I realized that the monogram on the obverse is slightly different:

My coin:

My coin is from 1753, and when I looked up pictures of the coin from that year, the difference was visible too. Is it just a different type? Should a separate coin page be created?

Should not have been posted, error on my side!

and now the coin to be compared to

They are quite different! They look definitely like different types!

Here the other sides

Your coin:

The numista coin:

They on the other hand do look alike (the 4's are a bit different and the mark under the date is missing on the numista coin)

Thank you for your confirmation. What should we do now? Add a new coin? Put it in the comments of the exist coin?

For grins and giggles I looked on ebay. Everyone of them that is 1753 is like yours. Everyone that is 1756 or 1758 (only other dates available) look like the one on Numista.

To me, it seems as you have two different types, one for 1753, and one for 1756 & 1758 as in numista.  So you have found a new type with no KM#. So you just have to continue your research to confirm this and see, if other years conform to either type.

In the meantime, you can document, the differences already found and inject the found knowledge into the km#3 year lines and comments section in numista. Don't forget to add your name to the documentation of the variant, until now unknown!

Enjoy

Of course KM gives nothing

Well, I did some more research and found some coins that are on MA - Shops that look similar to mine. They all used the Schneider Catalogue (Konrad Schneider, Das Münzwesen in den Grafschaften Wied-Neuwied und Wied-Runkel)  which I do not own. Apparently the catalogue is already on numista, but only used as a reference for a singular coin.

Unfortunately, the coins on MA Shops are all slightly different

(Wied-Runkel Cu 1/4 Stüber 1752 Dierdorf Johann Ludwig Adolf 1706-1762 Sehr selten. Sehr schön | MA-Shops or Wied-Runkel Cu 1/4 Stüber 1754 Dierdorf Johann Ludwig Adolf 1706-1762 Selten. Schön - sehr schön | MA-Shops)

and all have different catalogue numbers, therefore I cant just use a number given there.

I also noticed that the Numista catalogue of Wied-Neuwied and Wied-Runkel in general is very incomplete, but I do not own the Schneider catalogue and until a member that owns it completes the catalogue, I will not be able to add my coin.

For now, I will add it as an undetermined version of the already existing coin.

To me, it seems the 1752 and 53 are very similar (same type), but you need to find the images for the other singular years, to see, when they really separate. Then you know if you make that your 2023 project, you still have 362 days to find the solution. Enjoy!

I don't know if this is at all helpful.  About 2 years ago I added this coin to the Numista catalogue N#259081 .

It only differed from our existing entry because of the die-cutters symbol below, which KM covered with two different #'s.

I think your coin has a die-cutter symbol also.

It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble.  It's what you know for sure, that just ain't so.  Mark Twain
