I just recently bought a job lot of coins at a auction and came across this silver coloured 1896 one penny. It's in really good condition and is just about gleaming, I've never seen a one penny like it. I cant seem to find too much infomation online other than it could possibly be a ‘maundy coin’. I dont have access to scales to weigh it. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
I also believe that your penny has been plated in silver. It was very popular among lower class citizens to Retrofit coins for various decorative and/or religious purposes. For example Here is a farthing I have which has been plated in gold and fitted with a gemstone.

maundy pennies are much smaller and have a very distinct design, with a huge “1” on the reverse.
Oops! That may have been one of mine! As a kid I used to silver-plate pennies using an electric current from my model train transformer and some silver-plating solution. Tried passing them off for half-crowns but soon got caught. Lesson learned!
Silver nitrate solution? you could get it at any good hobby shop or woolworths as I recall. I had a lot of fun with that As a lad. Did you get it on your fingers? Lesson learned.
