Hi,

I will be in Amsterdam  from July 7th through July 16th.

is anyone interested in an in-person swap? message me

also, any recommendation for flea market and bazaar to hunt for banknote while in Amsterdam? Thanks

Alfonso Olaiz

I just used the OUTINGS function (next to the FAQ icon, on horizontal toolbar below your account) & found 4 places in Amsterdam:

However, I suggest you really brush up on your grading & research the notes/coins you may be interested in.  I visited shops in Leipzig, Berlin Germany, Prague CR & Salzburg, Austria (not to mention a shop in Pattaya, Thailand).  They all had one thing in common: over graded notes priced about 4 to 10X what I would expect to pay online.  I discussed this with about 50% of the staff. Most shrugged & said they didn't own the place (there was nothing they could do) but the I have come to expect this as the coin shops here in Canada are similar.  I bought a couple Euro coins in Salzburg as his banknote stock was shameful & I wanted some souvenirs for my nephews.

I would never recommend a flea market to anyone interested in this hobby. Your best opening line would be, “do you really think I'm that stupid?”

I agree with Serial_Number_8. But in an shop Zadar Croatia I had completely different situation. A note for 10 Kuwait dinars was selling for 7€ but it is worth 30€. You know I had to buy it.

Thank you, Serial_Number_8,

I had looked at the outings section,  and will plan to pay a visit to a shop, and maybe one of the flea markets.   Sometimes you get lucky. But like you say you have to do your homework.

I have definitely experienced what you mention of over priced notes. Sometimes local people will know about hidden gems. For me personally, the hunt is part of the thrill.

Anyhow, once I am back, let me know if you would be interested in exploring a swap.

Best regards

Alfonso

Yes, the “thrill of the hunt” is exactly what got most of us into collecting. Unfortunately, a lot of dealers expect this enthusiasm from us too & they do have rent to pay. It's also unfortunate that a lot of “local people” think they're numismatic experts (or that people have more $ than brains).

LCS are great for supplies & sometimes info but if I relied on the ones that are about a 45 minute drive from home, I'd have a tiny collection. Check their bargain bins b/c many dealers are coin collectors (1st) & may not know the various special serial number combinations. Review this thread on RADAR SN for special serials to look out for. Incidentally, I found the true rotator $1.00 from Bahamas at my LCS when I went for supplies (posted on Dec 7 2022). There were also a couple of QEII notes from Jamaica I wanted to buy from him but they were over graded (priced okay for the grade but still over graded).

There are exceptional coin shops & I have found US coin shops to be fairly competitive with online stores.  This is b/c most US dealers look on world notes as “dark currency,” ie an area that is not well known to most customers. They spend peanuts on world notes & don't mark them up much (just want to get rid of them).  Some world notes US collectors post that they have found in the junk bin (& paid peanuts for) truly amaze me! 😃
