I bought this coin on an online auction - medieval coin category. The title said “Grosz turoński XII-XIVw. - krzyzowcy” which translates into “Turonian groschen 12th-14th century - Crusaders”. Image search (https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?r=&ct=coin&im1=65946aee136b4.jpg&im2=&tb=y&tc=y&tn=y&tp=y&tt=y&cat=y&ru=&ca=3&no=&v=&i=&b=&ie=&u=&a=&dg=&m=1&f=&t=17-21&w=&mt=&g=&se=&d=&c=&wi=&sw=) didn't help narrow it down to anything. Closest thing is N#391049

It is supposed to be silver, but I can't say for sure. It has 18.5 mm diameter and is very thin.

Not a grosz, but maybe a denier tournois of France.

First photo has TVRONVS (CIVI?)

Hello, I think your coin is from the Abbey of Saint-Martin de Tours. Assuming I'm correct with my reading, I can see TVRONV[S CI]VI on the cross side and MARTINVS on the Castle Tournois side. I would guess it's a denier but could also be an obol. Here are the numista links

👍 Second photo should be rotated 90 egrees clockwise to see this easier.

Thanks! This indeed look like one of these coins. Would you happen to know what is the difference between the denier and the obol? The textual content seems to be the same. Unfortunately obol info lacks diameter, but looking at weight it seems that obol was smaller (also in diameter) than denier.

If I were to guesstimate it… With denier being 20 mm in the catalogue info, my 18.5 mm is somewhere between 20 and “smaller than denier”. Originally the coin must've been bigger than 18.5 mm, so I assume at least 19 mm (and searching at vcoins for denier suggest 19 mm is a popular size of this coin [unless they copy-pasted 19 mm to all of the coins of the same type…]). And with obol being smaller by 25% in weight, I would guess it had to have around 15 mm. So my 18.5 is definitely closer to denier 😅

Weight is the difference. I'm not an expert in the subject but, for simplicity's sake, I would consider an obol to be under 0.6 grams. Above that I would call a Denier
