The coin I have is definitely stainless steel (magnetic) and in the copy of the catalog I have there is a listing for this coin in 1979 with the KM#185.1a. I don't have the latest catalog so perhaps it was left out of the new one, but it exists!
that' interesting. I checked another catalog. It's the german "Battenberg - Schön & Schön" from
2006. It's also listed as "Nickel clad Steel, under nr. 65, page 455.
I might check if mine is magnetic - wait a second... YES it is! you're right on this.
Maybe it's Nickel clad ferritic Steel"? I don't know if there are any similar coins with the same
alloy struck by the same mint (other countries?) so that we might compare them
I've already discovered that some of my coding problems are due to my using a 1994 edition of the catalog. In this version there is a KM-185.1 (copper-nickel, 1959 only), a KM-185.1a (stainless steel, 1953, 1958,1967,and 1979), a KM-185.2 with small ships (copper-nickel, 1969, 1975,1976), a KM-185.2b (nickel-steel, 1979 only), a KM-185.3 with large ships (copper-nickel, 1972, 1975, 1976), a KM-185.3a (nickel steel, 1979 only), and a KM-185.2a (aluminum, 1982 only).
I can see how the numbers may have changed, but the varieties shouldn't have. Guess I'm going to have to break down and buy the new catalog!
