Wouldn't it be better if the ‘non-circulating coins’ section was split into collector coins and coins of denomination 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 cents, 1 or 2 euro that have only been issued in sets?  They are quite different.

I don't understand what you mean, can you give some examples please?

I think he means all the euro coins made of precious metals vs. non-circulating euro coins of 2 euros or less.

N#221843 vs. N#68396

You can split those by using composition filters; precious and non-precious.

Non circulating coins of low denominations are nothing else than coins for collectors. I am not sure what is the goal here.

Thank you for your comments.  An example is the 1 euro coin from France since 2022 - it is in the non-circulating list whereas the 2 euro coin of the same design is in the circulation coin list. They are different from collector coins because they are legal tender throughout the eurozone, if you felt like opening up a set and taking them out.

(By the way some coins of 2 euros or less are still collector coins, e.g. ‘¼ euro’).

Hi Angus - Yes that French 2022+ 1 euro has only been issued in a set so far that is why it is listed as non-circulating (NCLT). If the French Mint ever decide to put them into circulation that it will have to have that category updated to Circulating. Until then no. The 2 Euro of the similar new 2022+ design has been placed into circulation however.

Thank you, yes, I understand the reasoning, but I still think collector coins are essentially different from circulation denomination coins that have not been put in circulation.

As another example of inconsistency the €2 French coin is listed as ‘circulation’ for 2023, when it has not been put in circulation.  By your logic the 2022 coin should be in the circulation list but the 2023 coin should be in the non-circulating list. But the rule seems to be that if a coin was put into circulation in any year then all other years go in the circulation list.

Yes, once it hits circulation, even if it was initially NCLT it becomes a Circulation coin no matter what year it is dated.

Quite a few German Euro coins are in the same boat I believe.

Currently there is no way to split them, although you can add a personal note to any that are like that in your collection on Numista.

Cheers Mike

I have also few times wondering if the type “standard circulation coin” is correct in Finnish 1 euro cent and 2 euro cent coins. They were never circulated at least in Finland and will not. That is because retail payments are rounded in principle to the nearest 5 cent. Due to the rounding rules in cash payments one and two cent coins are not used in Finland. These smallest denomination coins are however also legal tender in Finland, but retailers are not bound to accept them.  So are those coins standard circulation coins at all, just wondering.

Finnish 1 and 2 euro cents are surely in standard circulation outside of Finland, it's not that rare to get them from circulation in Estonia and Latvia. Especially after couple of years ago (2017?) when Estonian central bank allegedly purchased and distributed Finnish 1 and 2 cent coins from Bank of Finland.
