Good morning,

I recently purchased some 10 Euro proof silver coins from 2003 Finland, commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the death of Anders Chydenius, with box and certificate.

The weight declared by the mint and on the certificate of authenticity is 27.4 grams, in reality when I weigh them I get values from 26.88 grams to 26.95 grams. Do you think this weight difference of around 2% could be normal?

Thank you

This one?

There is probably a tolerance.

Is your scale accurately calibrated?

You may wish to contact the Finnish Mint directly by email to ask your question.

There is a contact link on the website.

Yes, it is exactly that coin in the proof version.

I carried out the calibration again and also tried with another scale and the result is the same, the 3 coins weigh one 26.88 grams and the other two 26.95 grams.

I'll try to contact the mint as you advised, thanks :)

You are welcome!  Good luck with that.  Please keep us posted.

The mint replied to me like this:

“The normal weight tolerance for this coin should be plus or minus 0,5 g compared to declared weight.”

Wow. So your examples are basically within tolerance.  A tolerance of half of a gram seems a little high though.  Be sure to keep a copy of the response for future reference!

Yes at this point I think it is not a mint with high standards, in fact in the characteristics of their silver and gold coins only the diameter and not the thickness of the coin is provided...
