Hi all, I was just wondering for those who have any isle of man 5ps and 10ps from 2014-2016 if you could tell me which years and die marks are magnetic or not, I ask this as there are 2 options for these coins on Numista, and to me it makes no sense for them to have been made out of 2 different compositions at the same time.

My hypothesis is that they ran out of the non magnetic blanks sometime during 2014

Many thanks

This is a good question. Noticed this also some time ago. Unfortunatelly I collect by type and I have only 2007 (non magnetic) and 2015 (magnetic) so hard to say based on so small sample.

Isle of Man coins catalogue by M.Southay doesn't say anything about plated steel version (magnetic) which exist.

It make no sense to have two different blanks, but on the other hand, why not? They could start to use new alloy but mix it with the remaining old one. Strange but not impossible.

Let's wait for collectors who have each year/die mark and can say more about.

Just had a quick look & I have only got the magnet versions of  these 10p's :-

2014 ‘BB’

2015 ‘AB’

2016 ‘AA’

Please add these to your list.

Thanks, Merv

Awesome, thanks both.

ooh 2013 is a slight curveball to what I expected, thanks for the reply

This page from 2013 says there is also a magnetic 2013 5p.

https://worldcoinnews.blogspot.com/2013/06/isle-of-man-5-10-pence-2013-magnetic.html

(Although the page doesn't say they had seen and tested any coins.)

Schön (1901-2000(sic), 47th edition, 2022) lists 5p magnetic and non-magnetic 2014 and only magnetic after. For 10p they say everything magnetic from 2013 on. Schön (2001-2016, from 2017) doesn't list the magnetic types.

5 p 2013aa non magnetic.

According to my records, I have both magnetic and non-magnetic for 5p 2015 AA and 2016 AA. Clearly I should check this more closely, was intending to photograph my tiny Manx coins anyway to be 100% sure of the die letters.

For 10p I only have one coin from those years, a non-magnetic 2015 AB.

So it could be the case that both version exists. Sometimes (like Canada, UK), the magnetic was issued for circulation and non-magnetic was used in sets. Maybe this is the case also here.

Alright, going through a small bunch of manx coins and can only find magnetic ones. Thank you for this informative thread.

Hi, I just received some IOM circulation coins, including the 2013-2014 5p and 10p and I guess I already have some final comments about these coins. But first, I will list what I have:

5p:

2013 AA non-magnetic

2014 AA (both AA on same level) non-magnetic

2014 AA (second A lower than first one) magnetic

2014 AB magnetic

2014 AC magnetic

2014 AD magnetic

2014 BA magentic

10p

2013 AA - magnetic

2014 AB - magnetic

2014 BA - magnetic

2014 BB - magnetic

2014 BC - magnetic

2014 BD - magnetic

As reported by multiple users: 2012 and earlier coins are all CuNi (non-magnetic). All coins after 2015 are nickel plated (magnetic) but this was not recognized on time by Krauze/Schon catalogues and it seems new years were added to the Numista page for magnetic versions.

For 2013, it seems that 10p AA (the only one variant of 10p) is magnetic. If anybody has the non-magnetic version, please let me know.

5p 2013 is stil non-magnetic (also only AA known).

For 2014, it looks that 10p is naturally magnetic for all variants as the metal change was in previous year.

For 5p: seems that part of 2014 AA mintage (with AA on same level / "AA right") is non-magnetic and other part of AA and all next die letters (AB, AC, AD, DA) are magnetic.

I just added “non-magnetic” in the title of older versions, so now, users can clearly see that this page is for CuNi coins and for the plated steel is another one page.

I will ask admins to move users of from the wrong entries on non-magnetic coins and to move them to magnetic ones soon.
