I have found a shiny two shillings coin with the inscription "Zuid Afrik.Repub. on the back. It has an elderly gentleman on the front with a cap on his head and smoking a pipe. It has been made into a brooch. It was in my mother's collection of bric a brac. There are two possibilities: 1. She lived in Berlin until she was 23 so may have obtained it there (my grandfather had an antique shop) or she may have bought it or been given it on her way to Australia in 1939 (she stopped in South Africa en route). Can anyone give me any information about this coin please? The gentleman's hat and pipe have a criss-cross pattern stamped on them.
Yes, that coin with the gentleman with the pipe is almost the same. My coin looks very new and shiny and only has the man and his pipe on the front, nothing else at all. On the back there is the inscription Zuid Afrik. Repub. Two Shillings and some engraving pictures (lion, man and a wagon?) in the middle of the coin. The date on the back is obscured by the pin that has been welded on to make the coin into a brooch.
