There is a new section called "Clean up the background to white" and contains only banknotes at the moment (for me at least). But the vast majority are perfectly cropped. How does the background detection even work? I assume differentiating white banknote paper and white background is quite hard.
I have some coins and exonumia in my list as well as banknotes. Some are my pictures. Not sure what white background I didn't clean up before I created the page for this:
I see a very thin black line at the bottom and top. If that's not acceptable why only send a notice to fix it to those who have it in their collection? There's no reason to take a new picture. Anyone could just edit the existing picture. We could have a forum post and call it Co-operative catalogue improvement project - Image cropping or something like that that lists pages that need cropping background removal.
As in my edited post above there is non-white background. Not sure what is triggering the banknotes though. Whatever is going on it's just an automated CCIP. No need to only ping those with the item in their collection.
I can only see it work on high contrast images or already but badly cropped pictures (upper left: Scanned note that wasn't cropped, note/coin with very large white margins). Edge cases that are already cropped but have very small withe margins (upper right) should not be flagged.
It will probably difficult when we have low contrast (object to background, bottom left) for object or edge detection, light ones (bottom right) are probably easier for the machine then the human eye though.
Hello, The feature to detect images not cropped (or with cropping issues) has been improved over the past few weeks. The results on the “Contribute” should now be fairly accurate.
You can also search for all badly cropped pictures with the keyword /picture-background/.

Would it be possible to add this to the referee's section of “Improvement Hints”?
THIS is the only one I have in my jurisdiction with the picture-background filter, but it doesn't pop-up in the improvement suggestions. Probably because I already cropped it when the new section was added. There is nothing to really crop anymore but it can also no be taken out of the list so it probably has to stay in there.
