A type is all coins with essentially the same design on obverse/reverse, same composition, etc. differing only by the date, mint mark, etc. Not all catalogs will agree completely on which are varieties of the same type or differ enough to be considered a separate type. In the Numista catalog every coin page is a separate type. So, 217,118 coin pages = 217,118 types.
Think of current US circulating coins produced in 2024. There's the penny, the nickel, the dime, 5 quarters (different reverses) and the ½ dollar. So 9 different coins, 9 coins types.
