Trial strike vs. pattern policy

Hi everyone,

What is the policy on labeling coins as trial strikes or patterns? It seems like the choice to use either ‘trial (strike)’ or ‘pattern’ in a coin title is completely arbitrary. When selecting the type, only ‘pattern’ can be selected, so I suppose this is the correct description that should be used in all cases.

Looking forward to your replies.

Best regards,

Gerebernus

In Numista a Pattern Type is defined as:

Coin that was produced to evaluate a proposed design. These can be off-metal strikes, piedforts, trials, etc.

and the Coin Name direction states

Trial strikes (“essai” in French) should specify “trial” in parentheses. Piedforts should specify “piedfort” in parentheses. Off-metal strikes should specify the metal in parentheses.

So I think this means that Pattern should not be in the title. The type of pattern should.

Well yes, there usually is a clear difference between trial strikes and patterns, but in practice the coin name directions are not always followed when adding new pages or editing page titles…

I created some new pages of Italian trial strikes and patterns recently (without realizing the problem about the difference between trials trikes and patterns myself, but I'm trying to rectify the mistakes), and every page got accepted with the words ‘pattern’ in parentheses, even if this was wrong and should have been ‘trial’. Just some exaples of wrong pages (some added by me, some not, but all got validated by moderators even though the guidelines were not properly followed):

N#242069 → title says ‘trial strike’ instead of ‘trial’

N#242923 → title says ‘trial strike’ instead of ‘trial’

N#243171 → title says ‘trial strike’ instead of ‘trial’

N#243094 → title says ‘trial strike’ instead of ‘trial’

N#244304 → title says ‘trial strike’ instead of ‘trial’

N#246856 → title says ‘trial strike’ instead of ‘trial’

N#308998 → title says ‘pattern’ instead of ‘trial’

N#429727 → title says ‘pattern’ instead of ‘trial’

N#308996 → title says ‘pattern’ instead of ‘trial’

N#429732 → title says ‘pattern’ instead of ‘trial’

N#429730 → title says ‘pattern’ instead of ‘trial’

This is just the ‘tip of the iceberg’ but there are so many of these mistakes it makes me wonder why new pages are even validated if the coin name directions are clearly not followed. Sometimes the title says ‘trial strike’, sometimes just ‘trial’ and sometimes ‘pattern’, even when the pattern is actually a clear trial strike (with words like ‘essai’ or ‘prova’ mentioned on the coin).

I could of course correct these mistakes myself, which I will gladly do,  but I just feel like there should be a better way to avoid these mistakes so that we don't have to correct them afterwards.

To be clear, I do not wish to judge anyone making these mistakes as I make them myself sometimes, but I just feel like some pages are all over the place…

I think you can find all kinds of inconsistencies between the guidelines and accepted coin pages. The issue you point out is probably just a minor part. Some of the reasons are that the guidelines are created and evolve over time, different referees have different opinions on when/how the guidelines can be bent or just disagree with them and run “their” country as they see fit regardless of the guidelines, some referees (maybe admins too) aren't aware of the all the guidelines, etc.  That's the price that must be paid when you crowd source the creation and upkeep of a catalog such as this.

I go for PATTERN

I think that's a good summary of the situation. In any case, my autistic side finds it hard to work with so many discrepancies, even within the same area of interest of country. I'll try my best to cope with the situation and correct mistakes as I find them 😅
