Counterfeit or genuine? 1902 Kiangnan 7 Mace and 2 Candareens [gelöst]

Hi all!

I very recently started organising the coins I have been collecting since I was a child.

To my surprise, among a few other Chinese coins in my Australian coins, I have found this.

I don’t know how or who I got it from, but I have had several relatives visit China a few times over the years.

I always thought it was some kind of medal, but this whole time, it was a coin!

From my short research into this so far, it looks to be a 1902 Kiangnan Province 7 Mace and 2 Candareens (1 Yuan?) coin.

I am trying to figure out if it is genuine, as I could imagine (and there seems to be quite a lot of questions online about counterfeits of these) that this could be fake.

I will be weighing it tomorrow, and will measure it as soon as I can.
So far, it is definitely not magnetic.

Does anyone have experience with coins like these?

Thank you for any help!

Liam

Welcome to Numista. It is very difficult to detect visually even for experts and without basic information such as weight and diameter it will be virtually impossible to accurately assess with any certainty. Sometimes the easiest way to authenticate is simply an accurate weight reading. Always assume it is a counterfeit until proven otherwise. The world is flooded with them and it is very tiresome to try to authenticate with the sheer volume of counterfeits. With a quick visualization, I am already suspect. Compare to genuine type.

To my mind the coin is doubtful, the main reason is  teeth along the rim. They look thicker and not smooth, especially between NAN and PROVINCE

Looks cast i.e. fake

Thanks for the replies.

I got some scales and have some measurements.

Not looking good for this one based on what I am comparing.

Weight is coming in at 24.9. Seems far enough from the common references I see of ~26.5 grams

Diameter is 38mm, seems 40mm is the common size for authentic versions

It is 2.5 mm wide.

Looks like its over for this one right?

Yes, as I said previously the prerequisites to authenticating almost anything can be as simple as the very basics such as comparing them to what is already officially authenticated,  ie  weight, diameter, composition, etc.  Had you sent that in to be professionally assessed and graded, you would have paid dearly for absolutely nothing.
