Mary & Philip groat inscriptions - forgery [gelöst]

Hi,

I have the Philip & Mary groat attached but note 2 discrepancies in the inscriptions compared with N#52662 - ‘Z’ vice ‘ET’ on obverse and missing ‘V’ in ‘ADVITO’ on reverse.

Both Numista dBase and Spink mention there are variations in inscriptions.

My question is "Is it a forgery or are these  'acceptable' variations".

All opinions very much welcomed.

I am no expert on these types but because you have received no help from anybody I did some preliminary searches to try to help. Included below is an entire thread entitled and dedicated to “Tudor history”. A poster shows the exact same variety with the "Z's" sans the "ET" that he is very proud to have finally acquired and there are nothing but responses of admiration while I see nobody questioning it's authenticity. I also attached 2 others that favor authenticity and one site that I found that sadly casts doubt. Good luck with it.

Firstly, very many thanks for your interest and information.
As  you say, some (mostly) good new,  some bad. Not sure how to proceed. Possibly I’ll try valuation etc with large auction house.

Thanks again, I really appreciate your work on my behalf.

Just looking at it I am quite confident it is authentic. If anyone can fake wear and patina so well, we're in big trouble.

There are several examples of “Z” in the legend on CoinArchives; note this one among others where the seller describes it as “legend with Z for ET”.

Many thanks for your interest and information.. Encouraging!  The 'weight' of advice received is on the positive side (but not 100%).

Thanks again, ATB
