Hi folks, I'm very much a newbie and still learning coins. I have this 1808 one cent coin which appears to have been squared off all the way around the coin. I'm assuming this was done post mint. My question is how does this affect the grade and value of the coin?

When grading coins such as this the grade is a measure of the circulation wear and PDM (post mint damage) doesn't come into play except as a comment (e.g. "G04 with damage" or “VF35, scratches on reverse”).  As far as affecting value, I'd say that the damage to the edge would lower the value about to 50% (somewhere around $60 to $80).

Here is an excellent tool to help you learn to grade your (US) coins:  https://www.pcgs.com/photograde/#/classiccent/grades It's a picture/grade visual example of this coin from PO01 to MS67.

Wow, what a fantastic answer and super helpful. Thank you for taking the time to reply and provide the excellent guidance tools, best wishes Mike

Nice coin regardless. Just think, Thomas Jefferson was president when this coin was struck.

Thank you. Also have a 1817 large cent with coronet head and 15 Stars instead of the usual 13 stars 😁

Now you are just showing off. 😁. The 1817 15 stars is definitely more desirable and valued higher than the 13 star type. Probably a VG 10 grade, but both nice coins in spite of the PMD to the 1808.

Lol, thank you. my collection is going to be focused for now on the UK one penny… II aam absolutely loving coins though… Really puts you in touch with history 😁
