Good evening,

I was browsing on Numista and found a Costa Rica 10 Colones with a Chilean obverse. I am unsure if this would be considered a pattern coin, since Numista defines it as a, “coin that was produced to evaluate a proposed design”. However, wouldn't this coin count as being an error rather than a deliberate pattern?

I agree, not a pattern. But aren't error coins outside of the scope of Numista (unless they are common enough)?proof

Yes, it is an error - a Mint error. Not a Mint pattern.

Hence it is called a mule.

“In the Numista catalogue, the variations are not listed as mintage lines. They can be mentioned in the comment field. By exception, mules are listed in the catalogue as separate types.”

Okay. Thank you for the clarification.
