Can anybody confirm the authenticity ofthis coin bought as souvenir in Iceland

P J Molenaar

That coin wasn't made in 1922.  It's a copy/fake/tourist souvenir of this coin:   N#6021

Thanks for the quick response. I thought so just had to check. Amazing to what extent someone goes to produce fake coins. Can't be easy. Why would someone produce something fake with the wrong date?

P J Molenaar

Because people buy them as souvenirs.

Just for the fun, the mint master's initials do NOT exist on the jeton, JHI instead of HCN

True, I noticed that too but figured the date was much more obvious. I suspect the Icelandic government made it as a souvenir.

Thank you everybody for the reply. I also noted all the remarks above but maybe I missed something I thought. I did however manage to identify at least 20 other coins bought as souvenirs. Not all was fake.

You can't fake a non-existing coin, so legally there's nothing wrong I suppose. When you use an existing date you're making fake coins and that's illegal.
