How to notice a popularity of a particular coin / ruler? Some friends told me that I should look to online auctions,.. However, is it really relevant? I suppose that it is highly influenceb by current supply of a shop. So, where is the truth?

I am not sure what you mean by popularity, but there is a NRI (Numista Rarity Index) in each Numista page that I think is very useful to know if a coin is common or uncommon, also for each year there is a % of occurrences.

For prices, I think Numista is not so good because is average global, so, sold items in your country will tell better what people is willing to pay to buy coins.

Sorry if is not what you mean.

Please don't try to read something into the numista rarity index. That index is ONLY indicating how many members of numista have a specific coin. That's all, it doesn't give you any other information, and if I remember correctly, it's a per type thing and not for individual years….

I know NRI  always generates controversy.

But, IMO, NRI will tell a “popularity” of a coin, if we consider only circulating post 1900 coins.

A circulating post 1900 coin NRI 70 will certainly be something hard to find.

A circulating post 1900  coin NRI 6 will certainly be something super mega easy to find.

And of course, this is about TYPES and not DATES, but, inside each page with have a % of frequency of each date, so we can narrow that down,

Again, circulating coins. Tokens, old coins, NCLT coins will always have a high NRI.

As in, say, how popular coins of George VI are?
