Hello,

Can some with more 50 kopeek coins N#4580 veify the information from the numista websit:

"Two types of this coin exist.

Type 1 (2006—2014): steel base clad with tombac (90% Cu, 10% Zn) on the obverse and reverse side. Edge is partially covered, with steel base visible. The colour of the coin is bronze.

Type 2 (2008, 2014—2015): steel base electroplated with brass (75% Cu, 25% Zn). Both sides and edges are fully covered, the steel base is not visible. The colour of the coin is yellow."

My 2006 and 2007 coins look broze, rather with steel base visible.
But 2009 which should be also type 1 is more yellow/orange.

Is there any easy way to distinguish claded and plated 50 kop?
My coins are in circulated grades - therfore they might have changed colours
and maybe lost some plated edge showing the steel core.

Regards
Leszek

You might have noticed, that the 2014 coin only has one year line?

although it's stated that there are two different coin for that year. I have the feeling, that somebody gave us some strange information:

but didn't believe it was important or correct enough to be a base for an extra 2014 year line.

Did you look at your coins to see if the steel is visible or not? on my 2014M I can see the steel b

I don't know what to think, don't we have any Russians with access to many 50 kopek coins from 2014, to confirm those two types or not?

It seems that I need to make the pictures in the daylight.

Ole,
can you send pictures of the edges of your coins?

2006 exist as reeded and plain for both mints

From 2007, they are all plain

The question is which plain edge belongs to claded coin and which to plated one.
It seems that in the case of plain edges from my picture one can see some core.
Which coins on the picture (according to your opionion) are plated and which are claded?

The definition on numista is correct.

I checked my magnetic (plain edge) 50 kopeks.

Although there are red and yellow ones, the edge on all of them shows steel core!

Regarding the reeded ones (N#1729), there are similar differences in colour:

So? Should we rely on colour or on the edge?

Not on the color, if you have a dirty and clean coin, they'll also have different colors!

According to: https://www.cbr.ru/eng/cash_circulation/coins/50k/

Material: since the 2nd half of 2006 — bi-metal (copper-zinc clad steel)
from 2015 — brass plated steel

Can anyone send pictures of the edge of 2015 coin?
(which according to CBR is the only plated year)
or
Picture of 2006-2014 coin with pain edge  with no core visible (plated)
(Which according to info from CBR seems not to exist)

@tolnomur Can you please help?

Hi, ladies&gentlemen. As for Russian 50 kopeks. Till 2014 Russian Central Bank used steel clad with tombac for minting and you can see trace of steel on the coin's edge (see picture of leszek.nemo), from 2015 steel electroplated with brass used instead and no steel trace on the edge is visible. Just to stop discussion, no 50 kopeks with steel plated tombac 2015 is known on the local market, most likely in 2015 Moscow mint used old material for minting coins with 2014 date. All known coins dated 2015 are electroplated with brass. You can always recognize steel clad with tombac coin by looking on the coin's edge.

Let me know if you need additional information.

BR

For 2015 I fully agree - only plated version.
But please take a look on the egde of 2014 coin added by Ole… it seems that I can not see core there…

In 2014 both variants were issued, electroplated coins are known and not very rare, probably they were minted in 2015 with 2014 year on the coins. Our CB often uses previous year for coins minted in the beginning of the next year, this situation is rather common. Usually we see coins with current year at least in the end of spring, or even at the Summer time.

Are there any electroplated 2008-2013 known?

As far as I know electroplated coins from 2008 exist, but only 2008. All coins till 2014 were tombac plated.
