Welcome to Numista. What you have here is a well circulated coin with post mint damage. How exactly this damage occured is anybodys guess but this did not happen at the mint during manufacture only to be discovered by you 20+ years later. Perhaps it was part of a piece of poorly made jewelry in a bezel at one time. Nobody can know for certain.
