I was told by a representative of a Costa Rican national bank that the large, 500 Colone coin is being discontinued and replaced by a smaller, bi-metal coin.  Where can I verify that information?  Please reply to my email allendickinson70@yahoo.com

Thank you.

Seems obvious that they would change the old (last minted in 2015) 500 Colones coin 11 grams, 33 mm with the new 10.5 grams, 28 mm bimetallic copper-nickel center in nickel brass ring commemorative coins they've been making since 2021. Is that what you want to know?

You posted here and  I will respond here and not to an email address.

Cash out before July 1st. if that is applicable to your inquiry.

Wasn't this publicized in Costa Rica?

Yes, everywhere. I am always suspicious when someone asks for a response to a private Email on a public board. Something is not right here.

Maybe he was not aware that he will get a personal notification for any reply posted?

I was asking the OP since he lives there.

Seems like most answers, and I appreciate them, missed my point.  By “discontinued” I mean, I was told they are being taken out of circulation and will no longer be valid currency.  My question is three-part: 1) Is that valid information?  If so, 2) Where can I find confirmation of that?  and, 3) What is the cut-off date?  I hope that is clearer.

Maybe it was published here, but I cannot find anything about it - I am not Spanish fluent but can use Google translate if someone can direct me to a site that has that data.

Thank you.

Thank you Mr. McNasty.  I missed your links in the message.  Exactly what I was looking for.

I am sorry I raised anyone's suspicions by asking for an email response - I don't normally monitor this board.  Haven't you ever gone on a bulletin board, asked a question and never heard a word back?  If you aren't a regular user you might as well shout down a well.  I anticipated that would happen here because I had no idea I'd get an email notification.   Now I know.  Thank you.  I am now off to spend my 500 colone coins.

My apologies, nothing personal. There are many schemes out there where they are phishing for emails for identity theft purposes. These days you must be very  cautious about who you are dealing with and how you respond.
