I have a question about this coin:

N#14487

I do not understand the value table on the Numista page for this coin. The same value ($50 USD) is listed for VF, XF, AU and UNC for this coin.

What does it mean when the values for all grades are the same? Did someone actually pay $50 USD for a VF example of this coin, then someone else paid $50 USD for an XF example of this coin, then someone else paid $50 USD for an AU example of the coins, and finally someone paid $50 for an UNC example of this coin, or is this the result of some kind of error?

Also, the $50 USD value for this coin in any of those grades appears to be high compared to the SCWC, NGC website and Numismaster website.

If this $50 USD number is the result of some kind of error, what should the values for this coin in VF, EF, AU and UNC actually be?

There is a cap so that lower grades can't have higher values then higher grades and the UNC grade here seems to have the lowest value, pulling down all others to the same price (the value itself being realistic or not is a whole other debate).

All the price sources you've listed tend to be a bit USA centric and maybe most of the values come from Brazil collectors where it might be of higher value (but the one listed Katz auction is also higher).

Thanks for explaining how the prices in the value table are calculated.

Personally, I am hoping the Numista valuation for this coin is the more accurate one, because I have a specimen of this particular coin (which I purchased for $7 USD about 10 years ago).

Out of curiosity, I checked out the Numista pages for the other 1932 dated Brazilian coins that commemorate the 400th anniversary of colonization. There are 100, 200, 400 500, 1000 and 2000 reis coins in this particular series with the 1932 date, with the 500 and 100 reis coins having by far the lowest mintages.

The 500 reis coin in this series (which, unfortunately, I do not own)

has the lowest mintages of all the coins in the series (about 34,000 pieces minted), and its valuation table looks very much like the valuation table for the 1000 reis coin - the values for VF, EF, AU and UNC are all the same (presumably for the same reason you explained for the 1000 reis coin) and the valuation for that coin is $130 USD! So now I think you are correct, the SCWC, NGC and Numismaster valuations are much too low for both the 500 and 1000 reis coins in this series.

This what makes coin collecting so much fun - you learn interesting new things all the time!

Oops! I just realized I made a typo in the web page address for the 500 reis 1932 coin.

The correct address is

N#14482

Sorry for any confusion - I really regret not learning how to type properly when I was younger…
